COMSOL Results:
The double solenoid with iron rods with a separate iron plate was modeled as shown below, and the magnetic field was calculated such that the force between the magnetized iron rods and the iron plate as a function of the distance between them could be calculated. This distance is the distance from the top of the rods to the bottom of the plate.
The general design was modeled from Samuel Morse’s 1846 patent.
Furthermore, the horseshoe magnet was modeled in 2D, as shown below. Further work could extend this model to 3D.
