FROM EXPULSION TO EMANCIPATION

After their expulsion  from England by Edward I in 1290, the Jews’ gradual return to the kingdom was not obstructed, especially under Cromwell and the Stuarts.  Their increasing numbers, integration, and acculturation led finally, after several failed attempts, to the complete removal of the few — but not insignificant — remaining restrictions on their full participation in British society under Queen Victoria in 1858.
