Carb / Electrical

Carburetor Presentation

Our group began by taking apart the carburetor. It was in fairly good condition and was not too hard to take apart aside from the choke which had sum corrosion surrounding it making it difficult to remove. There was a broken gasket that needed to be replaced and the needle holding the float in was bent and needed to be straightened but aside from that, no repairs were necessary. After taking it apart, we cleaned some of the large parts with the glass beader and the brass and steel parts with the ultrasonic cleaner. Once all the parts were cleaned, we began putting the carburetor back together, and we were able to successfully test it with a completed motorcycle from a previous year.

Now, we are working to clean the parts of the electrical system and understand the electrical harness so we can reconstruct the ignition circuit.

In the past few weeks, we have worked on the electrical system, cutting wires and resoldering the stator. We also cleaned one of the other carburetors on a motorcycle from a previous year after sediment built up at the bottom of the gas tank and some of it clogged the carb.

We also located the hardware for the battery box and put it together:

4/25 – 4/27

We worked on mounting the oil tank and battery box. This involved finding the correct washers to get the correct spacing between the tank and box and insuring they were both straight. Glenn also made us a bracket to mount the ignition coil.
