Another remarkable example of Mayakovsky’s metatextual perspective is the doublespread that introduces a family of elephants. The text blurs the line between fiction and reality: “As if alive / in our book / [are] father elephant / mother elephant / and baby elephants."   Mayakovsky’s play with sounds, exemplified here with “slon, slonikha i slonishki” and at another point with “lama doch’ i lama mama (llama daughter and llama mama),” accommodate an audience of children.
