Herring in the Soviet Union:
Fish from the 1920s-1930s, as a result of meat scarcity via WW1 and the Russian Civil, was turned to by Russian people even when viewed as "un-proper" meat. Herring was commonly used among Soviets and even marked as a "perfect companion to a vodka shot or stew". Eventually fish became a main source of food in Russia and its consumption was even propagandized by the State.
