Что мы строим (What We Are Building), written by Leonid Savyalev, was published by государственное издательство (State Publishing House) in 1930. This workbook for Soviet schoolchildren celebrates the impact of Joseph Stalin’s first Five Year Plan (1928-1932), which pushed for rapid industrialization and the collectivization of agriculture. Its primary goal is to propagandize the building of a new Soviet economy and way of life. To that end, readers are tested on their knowledge of—and contributions to—such efforts. For example, they must fill in responses to prompts such as “What electricity is used for at home and in school” (p. 10), “What machines I have seen” (p.13), and “How I help my comrades who are struggling in school” (p. 19).
