UCLA Library Digital Collections are made available for interoperable use in research and instruction using the IIIF standard. You can experience the look, feel and function of these items using the embedded MISE viewer and IIIF Cropping Tool below.

View

First, explore items in the collection by clicking and loading any of the item titles.

  1. Open the UCLA Library Mirador viewer or use the embedded one below. Use the IIIF Manifest URL for one of the resources that you would like to compare, or select any of the pre-loaded items.
  2. Find the IIIF Manifest URL by opening the information sidebar in the viewer, and scroll down until you see the item manifest link. Copy (don’t click) the link.
  3. Click on the blue ” + Start Here ” button in the top left corner.
  4. Click on the blue ” + Add Resource ” button at the bottom right corner of the page and paste the IIIF Manifest URL into the text box. Click “Add.” The item should now appear in the list of available IIIF resources. Click on the resource you just added to open it in Mirador.
  5. Copy the IIIF Manifest URL for the second resource that you would like to compare, for example a second mural photograph. Select the blue ” + ” button in the top left corner. Click the ” + Add Resource ” button to import this IIIF resource. You can add more items to the list of resources and compare multiple images side-by-side in the Mirador viewer.

Next, once you have selected an item to comment upon, open the information sidebar in the viewer, and scroll down until you see the item manifest link. Copy (don’t click) the link, then paste it into the Manifest blank in the IIIF Cropping Tool below, and click Submit.

  1. click the thumbnail you would like to open in the viewer
  2. zoom and pan the image until you frame a detail you would like to share
  3. click the pencil crop icon and highlight the desired portion of the image
  4. a thumbnail of your selected detail should appear in the slider below (repeat this step for more details)
  5. click the thumbnail of the detail you would like to share
  6. select HTML as your output, and click Copy to get the image embed code for your comment (next section).

Share

Last, make this activity social and interactive by leaving a multimedia comment comprised of a name, text comment, and image detail:

  1. click the comment icon
  2. type in your name (or pseudonym)
  3. type in a comment title
  4. type in a comment describing your image detail, and any interpretive statement you would like to add
  5. paste in the HTML image embed code that you copied from the IIIF Cropping Tool above, and hit submit
  6. review others’ comments
