Project Description

We planned create a set of wooden coasters, with various designs applied to the coasters using the laser cutter and the curvey engraving tool. We planned to finish the coasters with a varnish. We performed research online and determined that our coasters would be 4”x4”x.25” in dimension. Should time have allowed, we hoped to make matching cutting boards and/or larger trays. These additional pieces would have featured designs matching those on the coasters, to create a larger matching set. During the semester, we were able to begin work on two prototype designs. The first prototype had an illustration of Nassau Hall laser-burned into the wood. We do not have a picture of this prototype and cannot obtain one as it is locked in the lab. The image of Nassau Hall which we burned into the wood is attached below. (file: “Laser Cutter Prototype 1”) The second prototype we worked on had the Tiger Inn logo engraved into the wood using curvey. We were able to pour resin over this prototype to fill in the etchings, but we do not have a picture of this. A photo of this prototype is attached. (file: “Curvey Prototype 2”)

We did not have the opportunity to apply a finish to either prototype. We also did not have the opportunity to cut either of the prototypes down to the correct dimensions. Both the prototypes are on pieces of scrap wood, that we intended to use to test our fabrication process out on, before we begun work using the higher quality wood which we had purchased. We have attached our technical design for the size and shape of the coasters themselves, which has not changed since the beginning of the semester (file: “Technical design”). We have also included several designs which we hoped to burn or engrave onto our coasters for the final set. The designs are labeled below according to whether they were intended to be engraved using Curvey or burned onto wood using the laser cutter. We enjoyed learning to use these tools over the past 1.5 semesters, and are sorry that we were not able to finish our project. Regardless, thank you very much for your time and guidance thus far. It has been a very exciting and educational experience for us.
