Project Description

Our project includes three different boards ranging in size, type of wood, and design. Using the x-carve and laser printer, we were able to create different designs with different handles and designs on the surface. Due to difficulties in our wood, as one of our zebra wood planks was warped, we had to utilize other techniques to attempt to flatten the piece. Another problem we ran into was with the calibration on the x carve. When cutting one of our boards, the machine shifted and therefore we had a small cut that was incorrect. In order to fix this we filled the extra cut with wood filler. The other aspect of our project was the wooden handles we created for utensils such as a serving spoon or fork. We used the lathe to create nice smooth designs for these handles and then attached metal pieces for the actual silverware. Once the wooden pieces were complete, we hand sanded to create a nice finish. Then, using a food safe finish we coated the woods and let dry.
