Project Description

The Jolly Jar(Part 2) will involve one moving piece(mechanical slider) which will dispense the candy contained in the mason jar on top, to the candy on the bottom. We will use gravity to transfer the candy from the top of the jar, to the base The candy dispenser itself will consist of 6 pieces of wood total and one mason jar on top. Our first step in the process will be similar to our first semester first steps, which is after acquiring the materials, we will cut the pine boards to the appropriate dimensions. We will continue to use pine as our wood because it is a soft wood that is easier to work with in addition to being relatively cheap. To cut the wood, we will use a miter saw because it provides accurate cuts over small areas. However, unlike our first semester, our second step will be sanding down each individual piece of wood cut, in order to provide a smooth finished project in the end. We will then also pivot in our approach to putting together the dispenser, because instead of using wood screws, we will use nails and wood glue to secure the base. Last semester, we used too big of wood screws which ended up chipping and splitting some of the dispenser itself, which in turn led to a sloppy finish. After assembling the wood together, we will then glaze the finished surface in order to give it an authentic and durable appearance.

Finally, we will attach the lid of the mason jar to the drill hole on the top of the dispenser’s base, in order to dispense candy from the mason jar to the sliding mechanism. As a note, we plan on also incorporating a platform to the bottom of our original prototype design, which will catch the candy after the sliding mechanism is pulled out. This will allow the user more accessibility to candy, and not forcing them to have to hold their hand underneath the dispenser every time they want candy. Rather, they just have to pull the dispenser and let the candy drop on the platform. That way, they can either eat the candy right then, or leave it on the platform for later consumption. Note: Unfortunately, we were planning on finishing the requirements for the midterm this week, but then as you know, the whole world went crazy and we had to focus on other things like figuring out how we were going to get home and what we were doing for the rest of the semester. These pictures are from our prototype last semester that we completed, and we can continue to work on them as we figure out more about what is happening, thanks.
