On the issue of<\/span> US military colonialism in Guam<\/span>, CHamoru activist and poet<\/span> Julian Aguon<\/span> writes in <\/span>The Atlantic<\/em>: \u201cWe need stories. And not just stories about the stakes, which we know are high, but <\/span>stories about the places we call home. Stories about our own small corners of the Earth as we know <\/span>them. As we love them.\u201d<\/span> Collectively as a class, this digital project will bring together neglected <\/span>stories, peoples, and experiences of war and militarization<\/span>\u2014<\/span>our \u201ccorners of the earth\u201d<\/span>\u2014<\/span>and bring <\/span>attention to the<\/span> global impact of militarization<\/span> in regions across the U.S. and the Asia<\/span>–<\/span>Pacific<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n


Students in HIS486<\/span> built on<\/span> themes and<\/span> theories discussed in class to heed Aguon\u2019s call for action, <\/span>resistance,<\/span> and<\/span> healing<\/span> through storytelling<\/span> and mapping. <\/span>For their midterm project,<\/span> students<\/span> worked in groups<\/span> to assemble a<\/span> multi<\/span>–<\/span>media <\/span>digital project that<\/span> analyzes<\/span> the<\/span> historical impact<\/span> of war<\/span>(<\/span>s<\/span>)<\/span> and militarism on<\/span> women and\/or <\/span>historically marginalized groups in<\/span> their assigned region in the Asia<\/span>–<\/span>Pacific<\/span>, including but not limited<\/span>
to East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>ArcGIS Story Maps provided the space for students to think <\/span>spatially and creatively with primar<\/span>y<\/span> sources<\/span> and to contextualize marginalized experiences in\u00a0<\/span>military<\/span>–<\/span>occupied and\/or colonized spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n
