We set up the clinic at a school about an hour and a half away from our hotel. The school is a bilingual school where children speak Spanish and Kichwa, and some of the older children learn English. Since this was our 4th day volunteering, things went incredibly smoothly and we managed to see over 300 students, resulting in a final tally of approximately 1140 vision screens for the entire week. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience to see children with very poor vision receive glasses: a simple gift we can give with benefits that will impact student learning and general quality of life.

In the middle of our screening today at noon, many of the students had to leave the screening and participate in a ceremony for the Spring Equinox. In the center of the school compound was an indigenous cross that represents the four cardinal directions – North, South, East, and West. The cross was formed from fruit that was given as part of offerings from the community to Mother Earth. The lively ceremony was performed in both Kichwa and Spanish and over 300 students were watching. Now we are heading back to the hotel for some well needed rest as we woke up at 5:30 am today.

-Iago and Bojan
