We are FRS 108 – Say What! Intercultural (mis)Communication for Spring 2025. There are sixteen of us, all from different backgrounds, from around the corner in New Jersey to countries like Uzbekistan and Zimbabwe, but all for one purpose: to integrate intercultural communication with linguistic analysis within the framework of Intercultural Pragmatics, exploring cultural nuances—both surface-level customs and deeper cultural values—and examining the intricate relationship between language and culture.

Throughout our class, we have learned theories and concepts from esteemed scholars of various fields—from anthropologist Edward Hall to the father of Intercultural Pragmatics in the early 2000s,  Istvan Kecskés. All of this content is for us to ground us in a foundation of intercultural communication aimed at helping us in a semester-wide project where we analyze our own culture, Bosnian culture, from a partner training to be an English teacher at the University of Sarajevo, and how our cultures intertwine.

To support our exposure to our partner’s culture, our class has taken a one-week immersion trip to Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) to spend time in intercultural workshops run by their University’s English department, excursions to other cities in BiH, and face-to-face time with our partners to have deep, meaningful, and organic conversations.

We hope to share our excitement and passion for intercultural communication through this website.
