Each Friday by noon, two members of the class will post 300-500 word responses to the most recent seminar on our &#8220;Discussion&#8221; page. \u00a0As our final project develops, specific assignments toward that work will appear below as well.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Week 1 (Sept. 4)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An introduction to the class&#8217;s protocols and tendencies, and to each other.\u00a0 No assigned reading.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Week 2 (Sept. 11)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For our own purposes (meaning our first hour or so of discussion as a class), let\u2019s all take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f21\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/283\/2021\/09\/KNOWLEDGE-final.pdf\">this ultra-concise \u201creader\u201d<\/a> that gathers some reflections on the concept of \u201cknowledge\u201d across various disciplines.\u00a0 And we should also throw in <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f22\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/330\/2022\/09\/Klein-Typologies.pdf\">this thing<\/a>\u00a0on the terminology around disciplinarity and its alternatives.\u00a0 Just skim!<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Dolven has assigned us two readings: an excerpt from Grossman and Halliday&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f24\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/420\/2024\/09\/Grossman-Summa-Lyrica-excerpts.pdf\">The Sighted Singer: Two Works on Poetry for Readers and Writers <\/a> <\/em>and an excerpt from his own book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f24\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/420\/2024\/09\/Dolven-A-New-English-Grammar-excerpt.pdf\">A New English Grammar<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jeff sent us this request:<\/p>\n<p><em>Hello all, I am very much looking forward to out meeting tomorrow. As we all prepare Grossman&#8217;s Summa Lyrica, I&#8217;d like to ask each of you to come to the class 1) having identified a sentence (a commonplace?) that you would particularly like us to take up, and 2) with a proposal for what to do with that sentence. (&#8220;Discuss&#8221; is a very very good proposal, and we&#8217;ll want to do our share of that, but it may not be the only one.)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Week 3 (Sept. 18)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week, for our time together, let\u2019s move from our collation of \u201cKnowledge\u201d texts to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f21\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/283\/2021\/09\/EXPERIENCE-readings.pdf\">a comparably selective\/concise collection of readings on EXPERIENCE<\/a> \u2014 a favorite category here in IHUM.\u00a0 \u00a0Jeff Dolven (our guest this week) and DGB taught <a href=\"http:\/\/dgrahamburnett.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/EXPERIENCE-SYLLABUS.pdf\">a whole Graduate Seminar on this topic<\/a>\u00a0some years back, which took shape in a final project that was part of the<a href=\"https:\/\/mglc-lj.si\/files\/bienalnik_2015_eng.pdf\">\u00a031st Ljubljana Biennial<\/a> (we were able to bring the whole class along that summer\u2026).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/classics.princeton.edu\/people\/faculty\/core\/brooke-holmes\">Brooke Holmes<\/a> from Classics has asked us to read:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f24\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/420\/2024\/09\/Foucault_on-the-Genealogy-of-Ethics.pdf\">Michel Foucault&#8217;s &#8220;On the Genealogy of Ethics&#8221;<\/a> and her text <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f24\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/420\/2024\/09\/Holmes_nature-of-plato-embodied-city_FINAL.docx\">&#8220;On the Nature of Plato\u2019s Embodied City and the Making of Biopolitics&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Week 4 (Sept. 25)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this week, let&#8217;s keep thinking about knowledge and experience and the problem (promise) of criticality &#8212; and let&#8217;s go after those problems by reading together (for our portion of the seminar together):\u00a0the AAUP&#8217;s statement, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f21\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/283\/2021\/09\/AAUP-In-Defense-of-Knowledge-and-Higher-Education.pdf\">In Defense of Knowledge and Higher Education,<\/a>\u201d and Judith Butler\u2019s interesting response, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f21\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/283\/2021\/09\/Butler-A-Dissenting-View-from-the-Humanities-on-the-AAUPs-Statement-on-Knowledge.pdf\">A Dissenting View from the Humanities on the AAUP\u2019s Statement on Knowledge<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our guest <a href=\"https:\/\/artandarchaeology.princeton.edu\/people\/jeffrey-whetstone\">Jeff Whetstone<\/a> (VISArts) has asked us to read <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/hum583-f24\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/420\/2024\/09\/Nature-of-Paleolithic-Art.pdf\">The Nature of Paleolithic Art<\/a> by R. as complementary food for thought.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FALL BREAK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Week 7 (Oct. 23)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are all going to read\/watch\/be-responsible-to the materials assembled in our <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1LbHd6aUiA2-RWeAMmv8zdscHVZVXOuGA5Z4h1Ee29uA\/edit?tab=t.0\">&#8220;ON TABLES&#8221;<\/a> dossier.\u00a0 To prepare for a kind of &#8220;charette&#8221; this week (we will have no outside guest).<\/p>\n<p>Bonus assignment (not required, but would be great if folks were up for bringing\/sharing something on this): an example of a project\/collaboration\/form from which we could learn or take inspiration as we begin to try to develop an actual &#8220;thing&#8221;
