Week 1 (Sept. 4)<\/strong><\/p>\n An introduction to the class’s protocols and tendencies, and to each other.\u00a0 No assigned reading.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Week 2 (Sept. 11)<\/strong><\/p>\n For our own purposes (meaning our first hour or so of discussion as a class), let\u2019s all take a look at this ultra-concise \u201creader\u201d<\/a> that gathers some reflections on the concept of \u201cknowledge\u201d across various disciplines.\u00a0 And we should also throw in this thing<\/a>\u00a0on the terminology around disciplinarity and its alternatives.\u00a0 Just skim!<\/p>\n Jeff Dolven has assigned us two readings: an excerpt from Grossman and Halliday’s\u00a0The Sighted Singer: Two Works on Poetry for Readers and Writers <\/a> <\/em>and an excerpt from his own book A New English Grammar<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n Jeff sent us this request:<\/p>\n Hello all, I am very much looking forward to out meeting tomorrow. As we all prepare Grossman’s Summa Lyrica, I’d like to ask each of you to come to the class 1) having identified a sentence (a commonplace?) that you would particularly like us to take up, and 2) with a proposal for what to do with that sentence. (“Discuss” is a very very good proposal, and we’ll want to do our share of that, but it may not be the only one.)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Week 3 (Sept. 18)<\/strong><\/p>\n This week, for our time together, let\u2019s move from our collation of \u201cKnowledge\u201d texts to\u00a0a comparably selective\/concise collection of readings on EXPERIENCE<\/a> \u2014 a favorite category here in IHUM.\u00a0 \u00a0Jeff Dolven (our guest this week) and DGB taught a whole Graduate Seminar on this topic<\/a>\u00a0some years back, which took shape in a final project that was part of the\u00a031st Ljubljana Biennial<\/a> (we were able to bring the whole class along that summer\u2026).<\/p>\n Brooke Holmes<\/a> from Classics has asked us to read:\u00a0Michel Foucault’s “On the Genealogy of Ethics”<\/a> and her text “On the Nature of Plato\u2019s Embodied City and the Making of Biopolitics”<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Week 4 (Sept. 25)<\/strong><\/p>\n For this week, let’s keep thinking about knowledge and experience and the problem (promise) of criticality — and let’s go after those problems by reading together (for our portion of the seminar together):\u00a0the AAUP’s statement, \u201cIn Defense of Knowledge and Higher Education,<\/a>\u201d and Judith Butler\u2019s interesting response, \u201cA Dissenting View from the Humanities on the AAUP\u2019s Statement on Knowledge<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Our guest Jeff Whetstone<\/a> (VISArts) has asked us to read The Nature of Paleolithic Art<\/a> by R. Dale Guthrie. And two of his artist statements: Post-Pleistocene<\/a> and FRAME-ABLATE<\/a>.<\/p>\n Week 5 (Oct. 2)<\/strong><\/p>\n Getting back to the question of interdisciplinarity, let\u2019s try this excerpt from Jerry Jacobs\u2019 book In Defense of Disciplines<\/a>, and also Julie Thompson Klein and Robert Frodeman\u2019s \u201cInterdisciplining Humanities: A Historical Overview<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Our guest Marshall Brown<\/a> (Architecture) has asked us to read\u00a0 Jonathan Lethem’s “The Ecstasy of Influence” <\/a>and Marshall’s piece “Collage Is… Collage Ain’t”<\/a>.<\/p>\n Week 6 (Oct. 9)<\/strong><\/p>\n We will touch on the essay form with a famous piece by Adorno<\/a> and a chapter by Cyrus Patell<\/a> on writing migration.<\/p>\n Our visitor Karen Emmerich<\/a> (Comp Lit) sent us two readings for discussion in our session: Her text “Translating for Language Justice, Across the Disciplines”<\/a> and excerpts from Archaeology, Nation, and Race by Hamilakis and Greenberg\u00a0<\/a>.<\/p>\n She also recommended two others — one by Fakhreddine<\/a>, one by\u00a0Price<\/a> — as complementary food for thought.<\/p>\n FALL BREAK<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Week 7 (Oct. 23)<\/strong><\/p>\n We are all going to read\/watch\/be-responsible-to the materials assembled in our “ON TABLES”<\/a> dossier.\u00a0 To prepare for a kind of “charette” this week (we will have no outside guest).<\/p>\n Bonus assignment (not required, but would be great if folks were up for bringing\/sharing something on this): an example of a project\/collaboration\/form from which we could learn or take inspiration as we begin to try to develop an actual “thing” we can do <\/em>(together) with\/around TABLES.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Week 8 (Oct. 30)<\/strong><\/p>\n For our time, let’s try a quick look at the Intro and Chapter One of Howard Singerman’s Art Subjects: Making Artists in the American University<\/em> (1999).\u00a0<\/a> (And keep thinking project stuff!)<\/p>\n Our guest Kinohi Nishikawa<\/a> (English and African American Studies) has asked us to read a text by Nathaniel Mackey called “Wringing The Word”<\/a> and his own text “Black Pagecraft”<\/a>.<\/p>\n Week 9 (Nov. 6)<\/strong><\/p>\n Everyone should bring a table-related object and should pitch proposals in our shared Google doc, which we’ll discuss and vote on in class.<\/p>\n Week 10 (Nov. 13)<\/strong><\/p>\n Starry Schor<\/a>, Professor of English and the Director of the Humanities Council<\/a>, has asked us to read a chapter from\u00a0Augustine’s Confessions<\/em><\/a> on memory and an excerpt from her poetry collection Strange Nursery<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n Week 11 (Nov. 20)<\/strong><\/p>\n The editors of the European Review of Books <\/em>(George Blaustein, Sander Pleij, Wiegertje Postma) have asked us to read two pieces from the magazine: Petermann’s “The Big Beige Books”<\/a> and Erard’s “Cannibalinguistics”<\/a><\/p>\n THANKSGIVING BREAK<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Week 12 (December 4)<\/strong><\/p>\n Final Project!
