Grace Keller ’24 – Spearheaded use of the emblazer. Fastened the panels to the uncut 4\u2019x4\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Payton Tally ’25 – Figured out how to use the wood shaving machine and shaved all of the planks of wood.<\/span><\/p>\n

Description of the project & intent (what & why)\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

For our project, we decided to make a \u201cwood collage\u201d using the many tools in the workshop. The collage is made out of 9 different panels, each of which has a unique design that reflects something about one of the members of our team. For example, we included a panel with the outline of New Jersey on it because both Sarah Brewer and Arman Young are from New Jersey. In addition, the four corners of the collage have the initials of a different team member (SM, GK, AY, and PT). We then connected each of the separate panels to one larger piece of wood to signify that our tastes were brought together in one big collage. The main purpose of this was to experiment with the different machines available to us and create art that reflects each member of the group individually and as one.<\/span><\/p>\n

Description of the tools used (how)<\/b><\/p>\n

The tools we used were the wood cutter, wood shaver, laser cutter, and emblazer. First, we cut one of our 4\u2019x4\u2019 plywood planks into 9 evenly cut square panels. Then, we used the wood shaver by taking one of our panels at a time and sliding them through the machine while slowly lowering the thickness on the dial. We ran each piece of wood through approximately 6 times to get them to the correct thickness, about \u2153 an inch. Next, we used the laser cutter to print the Princeton \u201cP\u201d and Princeton crest. We used the glowforge application to alter the power and speed of the machine and after several trial runs were successful in creating a design. The Princeton \u201cP\u201d design took about 1:30:00, and the Princeton crest took about 1:00:00. Then for the 4 initial panels and 3 state panels we used the emblazer machine. This process was much faster and we simply uploaded our designs or PNG photos from google to the connected computer application and the laser was able to cut the outlines we needed quite quickly. When all the panels had their designs we spaced them evenly on the uncut piece of 4\u2019x4\u2019 plywood and used screws and a drill to fasten them to the larger piece. The result was one cohesive design and is pictured above.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first version of how we wanted to lay out our \u201cwood collage\u201d with measurements that correspond to the sizes of the two pieces of wood we ordered. Designed on Fusion360. We ended up changing a few of the designs and moving things around!<\/span><\/p>\n
