Gowanus Oyster

Focusing on the toxic waters of New York City’s Gowanus Canal, this project explores the consequences of deaccessioned knowledge, and the parallels between acts of deaccession on the part of academic disciplines and acts of remediation at sites of environmental violence. Central to our project are two methodological concerns: first, how to curate an exposure to deaccessed knowledges that avoids the sanitation of potential sources, and experiences, of bodily and intellectual risk, and second, how to represent said knowledge through means that galvanize individual acts of remediation.
