Men had always seemed excessively beautiful to her \u2014 that\u2019s what she\u2019d felt when centuries ago, in her parents\u2019 house, in a ball gown, she\u2019d resembled a young tree with few leaves \u2014 the memory had made her terribly ironic later.<\/p>\n<p>And you couldn\u2019t tell why the weak had later become her prey.
