{"id":9,"date":"2019-01-31T15:29:32","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T15:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/cee262\/?page_id=9"},"modified":"2025-01-25T18:33:29","modified_gmt":"2025-01-25T18:33:29","slug":"syllabus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/cee262\/syllabus\/","title":{"rendered":"Syllabus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Detailed contents of CEE262A and CEE262B.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->A three part perspective is taken to study these structures: (1) the <em>scientific<\/em> examines the formulas which influence the form; (2) the <em>social<\/em> examines the societal context as well as the economy of construction; and (3) the <em>symbolic<\/em> reflects on the aesthetics and the cultural meaning. \u00a0The scientific aspect is learned through <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/cee262\/structural-studies\/\">structural studies<\/a><\/strong>, which provide basic concepts of structural analysis through some structures studied in lectures.<\/p>\n<p>The course is divided into two sections: CEE262A (LA distribution) emphasizes the social and symbolic, whereas CEE262B (SEL distribution) has a larger emphasis on the scientific.\u00a0 Both CEE262A and CEE262B focus on structural engineering as a new art form begun during the Industrial Revolution and flourishing today in bridges, long-spanning vaults, and tall buildings. \u00a0Illustrations are taken from various cities and countries thus demonstrating the influence of culture on our built environment.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/cee262\/syllabus-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>video representation of the syllabus<\/strong> <\/a>can be viewed with a Princeton net ID.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE THAT CEE262A HAS NOT BEEN TAUGHT SINCE 2021 AND IT IS NOT PLANNED TO BE TAUGHT IN THE NEAR FUTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Syllabus<\/strong> is comprised of <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/cee262\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/114\/2025\/01\/CEE262B-2025-Syllabus-Part-1-Course-Policies-1.pdf\">Part 1<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/cee262\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/114\/2025\/01\/CEE262B-2025-Syllabus-Part-2-Lectures-and-Labs.pdf\">Part 2<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/cee262\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/114\/2025\/01\/CEE262B-2025-Syllabus-Part-1-Course-Policies-1.pdf\">Part 1<\/a> is about the Policies and Procedures of the course<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/cee262\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/114\/2025\/01\/CEE262B-2025-Syllabus-Part-2-Lectures-and-Labs.pdf\">Part 2<\/a> lists the lecture and lab themes for each week and the due dates for the assignments.<\/p>\n<p>Think of the syllabus as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0a <strong><em>contract<\/em><\/strong> between us that establishes the prerequisites, expectations, requirements, and policies<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0a <strong><em>promise<\/em><\/strong> of the course, and how you can fulfill that promise (e.g. by completing assignments)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0a <strong><em>reference<\/em><\/strong> for logistical and administrative information<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0a <strong><em>map<\/em><\/strong> of the curriculum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Importantly, <strong><em>I want you to enjoy the process of learning <\/em><\/strong><em>without<\/em> undue stress\/anxiety, and <em>with<\/em> a growth mindset.\u00a0 Everyone has the capacity to succeed in this course and I will prepare you as best as I can to do so.\u00a0 There are many students enrolled, therefore I must make clear the course policies and procedures for a fair and equitable experience for all.
