{"id":293,"date":"2025-07-05T19:50:34","date_gmt":"2025-07-05T23:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/bach\/?p=293"},"modified":"2025-07-05T19:50:34","modified_gmt":"2025-07-05T23:50:34","slug":"linguistic-observations-in-leipzig","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/bach\/2025\/07\/05\/linguistic-observations-in-leipzig\/","title":{"rendered":"Linguistic Observations in Leipzig"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">As a linguistics major, one of my favourite aspects of the InterDaf language classes were the phonetics classes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">I think it was really cool that they taught the language with particular attention to the pronunciation and the production of german sounds that we don\u2019t have in English. In particular, I enjoyed learning about the certain environments in which \u201cch\u201d is pronounced \/\u00e7\/ and when it is pronounced \/x\/.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Another interesting observation that I was able to make about the German language were the similarities to French.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For example, when answering yes to a negative question, you would reply \u201cdoch\u201d , whereas for a positive question you would reply \u201cja\u201d and I was able to compare french \u201csi\u201d and \u201coui\u201d. Further, the tenses in German have similar purposes as the tenses in French. It also helped me to decipher when to use think and know \u201cwissen\u201d vs. \u201ck\u00f6nnen\u201d as it is the same in French with \u201ccroire\u201d and \u201csavoir\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Additionally, I was really delighted to learn that in general, many of the irregular verbs that change the vowel when forming the past tense are shared amongst German<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and English.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I was really happy to have been able to cross apply my knowledge of historical linguistics here as these verbs such as \u201c Iswim\u201d which becomes \u201cI swam\u201d in English and is \u201cich schwimme\u201d and \u201cich schwamm\u201d in German are a class of verbs called strong verbs- which English Inherited from Proto-Germanic!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a linguistics major, one of my favourite aspects of the InterDaf language classes were the phonetics classes.
