{"id":135,"date":"2022-04-26T00:10:59","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T04:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/antiracisttech\/?page_id=135"},"modified":"2022-04-26T00:11:09","modified_gmt":"2022-04-26T04:11:09","slug":"the-shalts-and-shalt-nots-of-anti-racist-hci","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/antiracisttech\/the-shalts-and-shalt-nots-of-anti-racist-hci\/","title":{"rendered":"The Shalts and Shalt-Nots of Anti-Racist HCI"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><em>A playful way to restate our guiding principles.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thou shalt use \u201cglitches\u201d as beacons for systemic issues, work proactively to identify them before they occur, and work quickly to address them<br \/>\nThou shalt recognize and counteract racist technologies and policies<br \/>\nThou shalt analyze, redistribute, and decentralize power structures<br \/>\nThou shalt not implement surface level solutions for deep rooted issues<br \/>\nThou shalt consider whether your solution may in fact be racist or usable for racist purposes<br \/>\nThou shalt question false universals (the \u201cflesh colored band-aid\u201d issue)<br \/>\nThou shalt embrace the fact that anti-racist technologies may not thrive in racist worlds<br \/>\nBut (as a user) thou shalt financially support the anti-racist technologies to help them compete in racist markets, to normalize\/increase exposure, or to organize \u201cgrassroots fundraising\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>And the &#8220;Shalt-Nots&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thou shalt not give data access to external companies or trust in &#8220;equitable&#8221; labels<br \/>\nThou shalt not assume that technologies offer the best\/only fixes.<br \/>\nThou shalt recognize your power as a tech creator to ensure that the users of their technology use the technology in as equitable a way as possible<br \/>\nThou shalt not capitalize on and reinforce social differences and stereotypes<br \/>\nThou shalt not shape data to support a conclusion you began with. Assume that numbers are not everything!<br \/>\nThou shalt not equate technological inventions or fiscal returns with social progress<br \/>\nThou shalt adopt technologies and designs that promote personal and group joy, empowerment, and inclusion<br \/>\nThou shalt convert hesitancy into a principle that grounds and guides action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A playful way to restate our guiding principles.
