{"id":25,"date":"2020-04-30T16:48:53","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T20:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/ant240-s20\/?page_id=25"},"modified":"2020-05-15T11:32:03","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T15:32:03","slug":"service-focus-initiative-projects","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/ant240-s20\/service-focus-initiative-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Service Focus"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Based at the <a href=\"https:\/\/pace.princeton.edu\">Pace<\/a> Center for Civic Engagement, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/focus.princeton.edu\">Service Focus<\/a> program bridges service and learning by allowing students to engage in hands-on service and forge connections to their academic interests through critical reflection and collaboration with community partners.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Service Focus connects students with funded service internship opportunities and introduces them to service-related courses along with community perspectives as they begin to shape their academic paths. Students were accompanied by our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdesignlab.com\/\">Jefferson&#8217;s Health Design Lab<\/a> partners Dr. Bon Ku and Dr. Rob Pugliese, and also community activist Bill Kinkle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Eight students in the Medical Anthropology course have participated in\u00a0the program&#8217;s Health and Care cohort led by Professor Jo\u00e3o Biehl and Yi-Ching Ong (Service Focus Program Director) and supported by Service Focus alumni Chitra Parikh.\u00a0Over the course of the academic year, this cohort engaged with three organizations working in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia around issues of opioid addiction and recovery, criminalization, gentrification, and resilience: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdesignlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jefferson Medical School&#8217;s Health Design Lab<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esperanza.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Esperanza<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativeresco.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creative Resilience Collective<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the unfolding of the Covid-19 pandemic, our alliance with the Creative Resilience Collective took center stage and students designed projects exploring health as human adaptation to changing environments and the role of the arts in recovery and healing. The site curates a collection of murals produced in collaboration with local residents, and together with the artists\u2019 own voices, offers reflections on the carceral state, recovery, and other ideas of wellbeing.
