{"id":33,"date":"2018-08-14T16:16:48","date_gmt":"2018-08-14T16:16:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/65-tiger-cub\/?p=33"},"modified":"2018-08-14T18:48:43","modified_gmt":"2018-08-14T18:48:43","slug":"feb-9th-2016-day-3-jamie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/65-tiger-cub\/2018\/08\/14\/feb-9th-2016-day-3-jamie\/","title":{"rendered":"Feb. 9th, 2016 (Day 3) &#8211; Jamie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>In Precept<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What we accomplished in lab last Thursday \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheels: Took off seat for access to wheel<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electrical: Helped disassemble fork, disconnected bullet connectors on wiring harness, took picture of serial number (two serial numbers match which means motorcycle is legitimate and we can use The Triumph Tiger Cub Bible)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frame: helped disassemble brake, emptied gas tank, removed stopcock from gas tank<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top End: took master link out of the chain<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom End: drained oil from 3 chambers, disconnected oil line that fed to the top end, removed nuts and bolts from bottom end, used Whitworth socket to remove plug<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clutch: took exhaust system off. Took off silencers (muffler)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fork: took apart handlebars (removed U bolts), fork, top of the mud guard (fenders) from the wheel<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fasteners: drew diagram of the two covers (timing side cover and clutch side cover), diagrammed where each screw goes. This way, we won\u2019t put long screws into short holes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photographer (Grace): took photos of forks, parts on the handle, bottom end<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prof. Litman: important to know which way things were, pay careful attention during removal. Make sure to locate oil screen at drain plug (problem that arose in the past).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lots of firsts:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Adjustable wrench<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Removing seat<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Disassembling very old motorcycle<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Working with mechanical parts<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Seeing, taking apart master link<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Everything was new!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Shop Class as Soulcraft (Introduction and Chapter 1)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Introduction (Leader: Vidur)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motorcycle references<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 throttle (lever that you rotate slowly to use more fuel) and clutch (a set of plates that allow you to disconnect the engine from the rest of the drive train. Before the transmission)<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 dipstick (in a car) (piece of metal that descends into oil pan to indicate how much oil there is)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the introduction saying?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diego: author explains his shift from academics to vocational work. Discusses different mentalities people have about different types of work<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ale K: wants to rehabilitate the honor of the trade, passive attitude toward technology. I think he goes too far his criticism of non-manual work<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Littman: He\u2019s preachy!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grace: Ironic that he\u2019s writing an academic book<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Izzy: \u201cMeaningful work\u201d and \u201cself-reliance\u201d tied to agency. He finds more satisfaction from labor, but it\u2019s not fair to say that knowledge work is not satisfying<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie: Is he going too far in his criticism of knowledge work? Can you bring manual labor up without bringing knowledge labor down?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parker: He\u2019s just asking people to reconsider why manual jobs are looked down<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">upon, not discarding everything else. There\u2019s an intellectual aspect to manual work<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preston: I agree with Jamie. Maybe we are sensitive to this because we\u2019re Princeton students<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Littman: Medicine and auto mechanics are both diagnostic arts. Intellectual activity involved in diagnosing<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grace: If it was as difficult to become a mechanic as a doctor, we\u2019d value them equally. Selectivity, intellectual standing<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micah: You can diagnose in many fields<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>First half of Chapter One (Leader: Catherine)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motorcycle references:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12 \u2013 welding<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welding: to fuse<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soldering: use solder to wet a surface to act like glue between two pieces of material<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brazing: solder is brass, acts as glue<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s most important:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ale K: Emphasis in the education system on not having a determined path. Craftsmanship is learning to do one thing really well, society values jobs that change<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Littman: One path is more limiting, one is more open \u2013 different forms of education<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ali W: feels more accomplished when he builds something physical<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Littman: to repair something, you have to understand it<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie: vocational tracks tend to be inequitable, track minority students into trades and privileged students into college<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ale K: Could you have a shop class that everyone takes instead of tracks?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Littman: sometimes parents of minorities don\u2019t want their kids pushed into college \u2013 stable jobs<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grace: hands-on education is important<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Micah: craftsmanship posing a challenge to the ethic of consumerism<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preston: cultural\/societal pressure to not go down vocational path<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenny: he went to college first<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie: Agreed, he comes from a place of privilege, getting to\u00a0<em>choose<\/em>\u00a0the vocational path after getting the choice of doing both. Some kids don\u2019t get to choose<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oscar: Is shop class the best thing for children who don\u2019t have as many opportunities?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Second half of Chapter One (Cognitive Demands) \u00a0(Leader: Grace)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motorcycle references<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24 \u2013 \u201ccarbs\u201d and \u201cbrakes\u201d &#8211; Carburetor cleaner dissolves waxy, dried-out gasoline, brakes have a different cleaner<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 \u2013 backfire is a really loud bang.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intake backfire: if the intake valve is open at the time of the spark, you can actually get flames.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cBackfire of a too-lean fuel mixture\u201d &#8211; if you don\u2019t have enough fuel, engine can run very hot and you get a bang<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26 \u2013 \u00a0Phillips head screwdriver has a cross, stripping a screw is ripping the threads out, either on the screw or receptacle<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&#8217;s most important:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ale K: cognitive skills required for mechanical work. Need judgment based on experience<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ali W: feels important in his community, satisfaction in helping others<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie: tangible sense of accomplishment, both in the physical motorcycle and the way people treat him<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Littman: there\u2019s certain types of work that can\u2019t be done offshore.
