It was important to remove these first so that we could allow room for the other groups to begin their own disassembly. Note particularly the four pieces numbered item 2. These are called packing pieces and are fitted specifically to the handlebars,\u00a0so we had to be sure not to lose them. On the handlebars is an engraved ribbing pattern that prevents the pieces from slipping, thereby preventing the handlebars from moving backward or forward while the machine is in motion. Our bike was also missing the left handlebar grip (no. 27). Luckily, we had the right handlebar grip, seeing that this piece is needed to rev up the engine. Another important piece is\u00a0no. 24, the clutch lever, which the driver pulls to take in the clutch to shift gears. No. 14 is the brake lever, which controls the front brake. Notice that one bolt has three washers stacked on it, while the other has just one. Each bolt should be the same length and have only one washer. The previous owner, however, presumably did not have two boltsof the same length, and\u00a0instead placed\u00a0multiple washers on the longer bolt to keep it from going in too far and piercing through the other side of the frame. This causes extra wear on the frame and, stylistically, it is a fashion no-no. Somebody call the fashion police!<\/p>\n<p><strong>DAY THREE<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"left\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"cell\">This is the giant socket wrench that we needed in order to loosen the giant bolt (see picture below) that held the forks in place on the frame. the powder coaters will sand-blast the frame themselves to ensure that the pieces have a finish that the\u00a0powder-coating will adhere to well.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"picture-component\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"clear\"><strong>MARCH 8, 2012<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"picture-component\">\n<div class=\"left\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"cell\">We started today by filing the edges of the seat mounts to get rid of all the little shards still attached.\u00a0 Then we fit the seat mounts to the frame- 13.9 inches from the U-bend.\u00a0 After holding them in place with c-clamps, we watched as Glenn welded the mounts to the frame with the welding system that uses Tungston metal and Argon gas in the process.\u00a0 The welds turned out really well.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body\">\n<p>We then went through all the parts of the frame and determined which ones need to go to the powder coaters.\u00a0\u00a0We had to\u00a0pound out the bushels from the swing arm\u00a0with a speically designed tool so that they do not get painted into place\u00a0during powder coating.\u00a0 We have a new\u00a0set of bushels, so we were able to\u00a0throw the old ones out and we can put the new ones back in after the swing arm gets back from powder coating.\u00a0 We\u00a0also had to remove a\u00a0few last bolts from various parts of the frame, because we don&#8217;t want\u00a0any removable pieces left\u00a0in when we send the\u00a0frame to the powder coaters.\u00a0 The\u00a0pieces of frame that need to be powder coated are all set\u00a0aside and ready to be sent out now.<\/p>\n<p>We also designed a piece on CAD\u00a0that will cover the opening of the fork piece so that the powder\u00a0coating does not get into the forks.\u00a0 Glenn will make two of these pieces, most likely manually on the lathe, and screw them onto the top of the fork openings before we sent the frame to the poweder coaters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clear\"><strong>Tuesday, March 13<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"picture-component\">\n<h4>an excitiing day<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-355\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/64-tiger-cub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2018\/08\/photo-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/64-tiger-cub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2018\/08\/photo-3.jpg 640w, https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/64-tiger-cub\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2018\/08\/photo-3-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 85vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We made the fork caps on the lathe.\u00a0 Starting with a solid aluminium cylinder, we used a drill bit in the lathe to first hollow out a cylinder with the exact correct diameter in one end of the aluminum piece.\u00a0 Then we used a bit with a special end and put the machine on automatic in order to put threadsd into the piece.\u00a0 We repeated the same process on the other end and then cut the aluminium piece down the middle so that we had two identical caps.\u00a0 We put the caps on the forks and they fit!<\/p>\n<p>Then we used the mill to take measurments for a gasket for the clutch-side cover.\u00a0 With the cover piece bolted down, we made a random place in the bottom left (0,0) and then moved around to each hole, recording the coordinates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOW OUR DAILY JOURNAL The engine has been removed and we are ready to start disassembling the frame DAY ONE We started by removing the handlebars.
