{"id":47,"date":"2018-08-09T13:18:38","date_gmt":"2018-08-09T13:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/63-2-tiger-cub\/?p=47"},"modified":"2018-08-15T13:38:00","modified_gmt":"2018-08-15T13:38:00","slug":"notes-by-david-mcelroy-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/63-tiger-cub\/2018\/08\/09\/notes-by-david-mcelroy-2\/","title":{"rendered":"12 April 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Notes by David McElroy<\/p>\n<p>Gathering of the Nortons<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gathering of interesting motorcycles<\/li>\n<li>BMW with horizontal cylinders \u2014 very smooth<\/li>\n<li>Older Tiger Cub \u2014 parts in different places, points in particular in very different place, shift the whole housing to adjust timing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Updates<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ricky, Noelle, and Alex: figuring out batteries and battery box, figuring out cover and other pieces to add to the battery assembly<\/li>\n<li>David and Alex K: tried to put the cover on the case;<\/li>\n<li>Brendan and Jake: putting things through the frame, putting fork tubes in, et, finished fixing the other motorcycle<\/li>\n<li>Julianne and Charlie: assembling top end, practicing putting in the items \u2014 very finicky operation<\/li>\n<li>Eric: Made progress on wheels, but they\u2019re very difficult to deal with<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reading<\/p>\n<p>Major theme: being the master of one\u2019s own stuff<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 4 for Tuesday, chapter 5 for Thursday About 50 pages<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 29<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The example of the welder \u2014 very skilled at doing something<\/li>\n<li>Chapter content mostly about Aristotle and Plato \u2014 and Phaedrus\u2019 thoughts about them<\/li>\n<li>All philosophy is footnotes to Plato; Aristotle had a lot of interesting perspective but wasn\u2019t a great leader<\/li>\n<li>Difference between truth and good\n<ul>\n<li>Pursuit of truth and goodness are two different pursuits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In some senses, the narrator is an Aristotelian (breaking down the motorcycle into its very small parts<\/li>\n<li>He starts to reject the Aristotelian, picks up more Quality stuff\n<ul>\n<li>Also integrates the Dao<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"30\">\n<li>In the classroom, he has his breakdown<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Phaedrus\u2019 birth at the end, we follow the narrator, it is a birth, or rebirth<\/li>\n<li>His professional relationships<\/li>\n<li>Professor takes command of the classroom, saves Phaedrus (from public embarrassment)<\/li>\n<li>Relationship with Chris\n<ul>\n<li>Chris is frustrated with his current dad, saying Phaedrus was \u201cfun\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>He\u2019s starting to come back into his own self, but how much of the younger him was in there?<\/li>\n<li>Strange narration \u2014 undeveloped<\/li>\n<li>He and his wife get divorced, but not until after the novel\n<ul>\n<li>Nevertheless, strange dynamic, with Chris not having anywhere to go<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"31\">\n<li>Chris learns of family history of mental illness<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a reckoning between the two characters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"32\">\n<li>They arrive in California<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The narrator is becoming Phaedrus<\/li>\n<li>We see Phaedrus\u2019 special font used more and more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What did we think of this book?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did we like it? Yes, seems the class consensus<\/li>\n<li>Most useful parts were in the beginning, some say<\/li>\n<li>Philosophy background would be rewarding, others say\n<ul>\n<li>Comparing and contrasting it with typical analytic philosophy<\/li>\n<li>But he covers a lot of breadth in terms of philosophy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>We liked going to the end!
