Removed excess paint from joints<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Brendan: Evaluated pieces from powder-coater, cleaned up fittings from fork tubes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Connor: found missing engine case bolts, working together with clutch+transmission to reassemble engine<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Eric: Worked on wheels with Bill, day 5 of wheel lacing but it\u2019s slow going. Spokes are OK, the nipples will go pretty deep into the spokes so they might be ground down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hannah: Eric said it all<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Grace: Connor said it all<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Alex K: sanded down powder-coated parts of the frame to make electrical contact. Every piece of the motorcycle needs to be the same electrical potential because tail-lights and other electrical parts only have one lede.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Charlie: worked on painting the cylinder with Julienne, finished top-end, started working on frame + cleaning out parts on the frame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ricky: removed greasy fabric from lots of the wires, cleaned wires and electrical pieces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Bill\u2019s presentation feedback: people loved it; drawings on tension and compression are especially useful and relates to Poisson\u2019s ratio (which concerns things having a fixed volume in tension or compression)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Discussion on this week\u2019s reading<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Chapter 16<\/b>: discussion lead by Brendan<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">No motorcycle references<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Grading system concept: having no grades.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">An interesting theoretical concept, especially in peoples\u2019 responses.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Reminded people of this class with how we don\u2019t have exact grades.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Not really practical reference because this is a fictional book and we don\u2019t know how this would actually play out<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Reality of wanting to get a degree vs. wanting to learn<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">\u201cimitation is the real evil\u201d before rhetoric teaching can begin \u2013\u00a0very true in things like writing seminar, where we\u2019re trying to imitate while outsmarting.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Julienne disagrees: there are many disciplines, e.g. music, wherein you have to practice what is already written in order to develop creativity. So there is value to imitation. Prof. Littman agrees: picasso invented his own style after studying others. In Littman\u2019s other course, you need to study others before you can be creative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Defining rhetoric and dialectic:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Rhetoric is persuasive talk and writing, to convince others<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Dialectic is a back and forth questioning for the search for truth<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Chapter 17<\/b>: discussion lead by Hannah<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Concept of \u201cquality\u201d:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Phaedrus\u2019 definition is that it can\u2019t be defined<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">It probably can be defined because it\u2019s a real thing that we interact with<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">It\u2019s easier to define quality in terms of what it isn\u2019t than what it is<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Important theme of the book that he grapples with<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">The different elements of teaching writing, and why you need an outline:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">An outline is usually a set of rules that you\u2019re given without considering, similar to how the scientific method is something that is learned without necessarily learning its practical implications. But the reasons are there, and they are valid; they\u2019re just often lost in the transmission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Be careful about definitions, because definitions are a theory. When he was cross-examined, Prof. Littman was very careful in trying not to define things but to give examples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Chapter 18<\/b>: discussion lead by Eric<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Esthetics<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">the study of quality, even though Phaedrus doesn\u2019t want to define it<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Conclusion is that quality can\u2019t be defined. Implications?<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">questions if quality can\u2019t be defined, then can you teach it? Points to example of when students were angry about his lack of an answer, they were upset because they thought that they were supposed to learn things that were already known.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">When you remove quality from the world, what are you removing? In some sense, you lose some quality by taking away beauty from things, or taking away their individuality.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">The consequence is that vulnerable populations suffer from a lack of basic opportunities without quality\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Maybe not? baseline standard of living is constant without quality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Quality in terms of aesthetics, or quality in terms of function. (Important distinction!) Which one is sacrificed in a world without quality?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Architect vs. Structural Artist:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">architecture is visually appealing, but doesn\u2019t necessarily function well.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Structural artist has a visual appeal to it, but it really works.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Chris\u2019 experience, based on the hike:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Chris should have swatted down his behavior a bit more as a gut reaction. Eric relates with a family member demonstrating similar behavior.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Must\u2019ve been really tough for the father<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">No matter what you do, your actions have outcomes that you can\u2019t necessarily predict.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">Prof. Littman\u2019s story about being a parent:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Sometimes it is important to stop bad behavior, but sometimes it\u2019s important to not turn a bad situation into a worse one.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Electricity Demonstration<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Solenoid with an iron pipe: powering the sole creates a magnetic field which magnetizes the iron bar and draws it into the solenoid. Pull is regardless of current.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Make and break circuit: coil of wire with lots of little wires in it.
