{"id":79,"date":"2018-08-09T13:55:39","date_gmt":"2018-08-09T13:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/59-tiger-cub\/?p=79"},"modified":"2018-08-15T13:38:28","modified_gmt":"2018-08-15T13:38:28","slug":"tuesday-march-26-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/59-tiger-cub\/2018\/08\/09\/tuesday-march-26-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday, March 26 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"body\">\n<p><strong>A<\/strong><strong>ssigned Reading for Thursday:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Detonation-energy-updated<\/li>\n<li>Combustion-chemistry<\/li>\n<li>My-little-deuce-coupe-new<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Articles can be found in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/ssp\/64-tiger-cub-1\/64-data\/\" target=\"_self\">64 Tiger Cub -&gt; 64 Data<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Began a new section of the website: &#8220;Problems&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First major problem to be listed: Crack in the frame<br \/>\nA major crack was discovered after sand-blasting the frame.<br \/>\nThe first general solution to this problem is to cut out a section of the frame and weld a new section in, in it&#8217;s place (however it can be difficult to align the insert correctly)<br \/>\nInstead Glen opted for the second general solution: Pilot holes were drilled at either end of the crack, a V-groove was drilled along the crack and steel was welded into the groove.<br \/>\nLearned about Magna-flux testing, a method used to find concealed cracks in frames.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>Highlights of what was done in lab(March 14th):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>General cleaning of screw threading and components.<br \/>\nValve seats cut and spring constant of old springs measured.<br \/>\nGasket CAD design was completed and new gasket was cut.<br \/>\nA few washers, screws and the Rotor key were discovered to be missing, but other components were found still screwed into the bottom end of the engine.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Littman reminded us to ensure all galleries are clear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion on Graded Presentations:<\/strong><br \/>\nThey should:<br \/>\n&#8211; be ~15 minutes long<br \/>\n&#8211; be Power Point Presentations<br \/>\n&#8211; include explanations of the section&#8217;s parts and their workings<br \/>\n&#8211; include computations relating to power, gear ratios etc (where applicable)<br \/>\n&#8211; be completed in class in the weeks before reading period (2 presentations per class)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prepared for next visiting expert in Combustion: Professor Ju <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wrote a list of questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Please explain the advantages and disadvantages of different gasoline additives and impurities (in particular: leaded and unleaded gasoline\/petrol, ethanol, nitro-methane).<\/li>\n<li>Please explain the significance of high octane rating and high compression rating with regard to engine performance.<\/li>\n<li>How does a turbo\/super charger work?<\/li>\n<li>What are the major factors affecting fuel efficiency which are taken into consideration when designing motorcycles and other vehicles such as SUVs?<\/li>\n<li>What is the relationship between the cc&#8217;s of an engine cylinder and the possible horsepower of the vehicle? How can one increase the horse power of an engine?
