Chapter 2 in Shop Class as Soulcraft<\/li>\n<li><strong>Book Notes: <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Soulcraft Chapter 1:<\/p>\n<p>= manual trades (ie. &#8220;vocational ed&#8221;) \u00a0are no longer emphasized in today&#8217;s schools<\/p>\n<p>= in college many students don&#8217;t learn anything of particular application<\/p>\n<p>= used to emphasize <em>phronesis<\/em> (translated &#8220;practical wisdom&#8221;); recent transition to promoting <em>sophia<\/em>, or wisdom in &#8220;eternal objects&#8221; (ie. math, science)<\/p>\n<p>=interviewers look for complacence and personality, not grades or specific skillset<\/p>\n<p>= author argues that being able to react to situations as they arise is more valuable than general knowledge (ie. surgeons cannot be replaced, but\u00a0x-ray technicians can)<\/p>\n<p>= draws disctinction between &#8220;personal&#8221; and &#8220;impersonal&#8221; or rules-based services; the latter is much more offshorable than the former<\/p>\n<p>Zen Chapters 3 &amp; 4:<\/p>\n<p>= narrator recognizes town\/motel during storm; &#8220;phaedrus&#8221; had been there before<\/p>\n<p>= narrator tells unconventional &#8220;ghost story&#8221; about man-made concepts like gravity (even sane people believe in these &#8220;ghosts&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>=the four continue on their journey; the narrator provides a list of all his gear<\/p>\n<p>NEW TERMINOLOGY:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speedometer &#8212; guage which measures speed of rear wheel (in mph\/kmh)<\/li>\n<li>Tachometer &#8212; guage which measures speed of the crank\/flywheel (in rpm)<\/li>\n<li>Open-end adjustable wrench (has a thumb roller to adjust the size of the opening)<\/li>\n<li>Machinist&#8217;s hammer (one flat end, one hemispherical end)<\/li>\n<li>Tire iron (for prying the tire off of the wheel hub)<\/li>\n<li>Impact driver (converts axial to rotational motion<\/li>\n<li>Feeler guage (for measuring gap width)<\/li>\n<li>Cotter pin (flexible piece of metal;
