The springs are in opposite directions (clockwise and anticlockwise) for even pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Question:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Why do valve springs need to be strong?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The springs provide the force for the valve to close quickly; if weak, the valve would open quickly and close slowly. The heavier the valve, the stronger the spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Wheel group:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Removed the rubber part of the tire and spokes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Learnt: <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spokes work in tension, spokes are threaded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Clutch and oil:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tuned the close to finished motorcycle and filled the oil reservoir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Checked for oil leaks in the secondary oil reservoir.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Problem encountered:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the motorcycle couldn\u2019t turn on when kick-starting. This was due to slipping; the torque was insufficient to turn on the engine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Proposed fixes: <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tightening\/compressing the springs that hold the holding plate and clutch plate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Using a spring with a larger spring constant; a spring with a larger spring constant is harder to stretch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Question:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Why so many plates?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the concept of coulomb friction. The more the plates, the more the surface, as a result, the basket can be made small.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Electric team:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Degreased and sandblasted pieces. (Grease needs to be removed first before sandblasting, as grease causes sand to clump)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ways of degreasing:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flushing the parts with water then drying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Using a degreaser.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Suspension systems: plunger types and hydraulic press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>DISCUSSION<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reading: Chapters 12-13 in<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Design<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (no motorcycle references)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>CHAPTER 12<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Discussion led by: Aminatou<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Content<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The introduction of the character, DeWeese. We learn that Phaedrus found DeWeese interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DeWeese &#8211; connected with the artistic side of things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interesting contrast on how the narrator is critical of John who is connected to the artistic side of things yet Phaedrus was interested in DeWeese, who shared in the artistic side of things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The narrator impersonates Phaedrus by understanding him though other people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A critical description of Montana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We learn that the narrator liked DeWeese because he did not understand him. This contrasts his usual behavior of getting frustrated whenever he didn\u2019t understand someone or something, for instance John.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pg. 141:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Troubleshooting <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">electrical system (what we learn from the discussion between DeWeese and the narrator on troubleshooting, when DeWeese had a problem with the light bulb):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Troubleshooting involves action and observation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One requires a baseline knowledge to troubleshoot effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Troubleshooting involves an individual being an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">experimentalist<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, not afraid to try and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not reckless(<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here\u2019s where experience is essential<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>CHAPTER 13<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Discussion led by: Rashmiya<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Content<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The chapter mainly involves 2 arguments; Phaedrus\u2019 university talk on accreditation of university education and his argument on faith, belief and doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Church Talk:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Based on the church talk by the narrator, we learn that based on the narrator, education is a mindset, not tied to a physical place, just as a church is not the building but rather what goes on inside it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People\u2019s views on narrator\u2019s argument or removing accreditation of the university of Montana:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agreed but as a student, accreditation of university still matters as it is a means of earning a degree thus means of employment, as a result it is unrealistic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The removal of university accreditation would result in less weight in college education, as a result, learning would cease to be substantial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From the Church talk, we learn of Phaedrus\u2019 fanaticism, as he argues on the Church of Faith being rational despite the idea lacking realism and rationality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professor Littman pointed out how it was interesting that Phaedrus used Socrates\u2019 idea on seeking truth to relate with his idea on university education, considering Socrates was put to death for corrupting youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Faith, belief and doubt:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The narrator suggests that everything always falls apart and that there is power in reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pg. 152: Through the analogy of the sun, that we have confidence that the sun comes up every morning thus we have no need to shout so, we learn that the narrator\u2019s lack of faith made him search for the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What do we learn about the narrator from the chapter:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was teacher of English<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He had an engineering background, wrote technical manuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emilly\u2019s notes for 02\/16\/2024 Recap of last week\u2019s work: Engine Team: Cleaned up rockers, valves and tension washer.
