Poetry That Speaks to Us
As part of CHI 405 coursework, students selected and shared Chinese poems that resonate with them—whether classical or modern. This project deepens their appreciation of Chinese language and literature while allowing personal expression and creative interpretation. It showcases how language learning can be both meaningful and inspiring.

 

田家元日

孟浩然 唐
昨夜斗回北，今朝岁起东；
我年已强壮，无禄尚忧农。
桑野就耕父，荷锄随牧童；
田家占气候，共说此年丰。

拼音：
Zuóyè dòu huí běi, jīnzhāo suì qǐ dōng;
wǒ nián yǐ qiángzhuàng, wú lù shàng yōu nóng.
Sāngyě jiù gēng fù, hè chú suí mùtóng;
tiánjiā zhàn qìhòu, gòng shuō cǐ nián fēng.

英文翻译：
Last night the Big Dipper returned North, and today the new age begins in the east.
I had a strong year, but I am still worried about farming without money.
The father works the fields, the boy holds the hoe.
The farmers predict the weather, and they all say it will be a good year.

 

满江红·冬至

南宋 范成大
寒谷春生，熏叶气、玉筒吹谷。
新阳后、便占新岁，吉云清穆。
休把心情关药裹，但逢节序添诗轴。
笑强颜、风物岂非痴，终非俗。

清昼永，佳眠熟。门外事，何时足？
且团栾同社，笑歌相属。
著意调停云露酿，从头检举梅花曲。
纵不能、将醉作生涯，休拘束。

Xīn yáng hòu, biàn zhān xīn suì, jí yún qīng mù.

英文翻译：
Spring sprouts in the cold winter; the aroma of new vanilla leaves fills the valley.
After the sunrise tomorrow, it will be a wonderful new year.
Don’t think about medicine all the time; write a new poem at the solar term.
It’s not a forced smile; I merely revel in fantastic nature.

The day was long and I slept well. But when will things outside be satisfactory?
It would be better to gather with like-minded friends and have a great time on this day.
We make good wine and study the ancient musical notations.
Even though I can’t be drunk all the time, I am free at the moment.

情诗·其三

张华 西晋
清风动帷帘，晨月照幽房。
佳人处遐远，兰室无容光。
襟怀拥虚景，轻衾覆空床。
居欢惜夜促，在蹙怨宵长。
拊枕独啸叹，感慨心内伤。

Qīngfēng dòng wéi lián, chén yuè zhào yōu fáng.
Jiārén chù xiá yuǎn, lán shì wú róngguāng.
Jīnhuái yōng xū jǐng, qīng qīn fù kōng chuáng.
Jū huān xī yè cù, zài cù yuàn xiāo zhǎng.

A light wind stirs curtain and shutter,
Morning moon brightens my lonely room.
My love is dwelling very far away,
And my poor chamber is devoid of brightness.

I clutch an insubstantial shadow to my breast,
A light quilt covers my empty bed.
In happier times I lamented the shortness of the night,
But now, in misery, I hate it for its length.

Grasping my pillow, alone I moan and sigh,
Feelings of sorrow cutting deep into my heart.

醉花阴

宋·李清照
薄雾浓云愁永昼，瑞脑销金兽。
佳节又重阳，玉枕纱厨，半夜凉初透。

东篱把酒黄昏后，有暗香盈袖。
莫道不销魂，帘卷西风，人比黄花瘦。

唐·王驾
鹅湖山下稻粱肥，豚栅鸡栖半掩扉。
桑柘影斜春社散，家家扶得醉人归。

É hú shān xià dào liáng féi, tún zhà jī qī bàn yǎn fēi.
Sāng zhè yǐng xié chūn shè sàn, jiā jiā fú dé zuì rén guī.

英文翻译：

Under the Goose Lake Mountain, the rice and millet are plump,
Pigs are penned and chickens roost, half-hidden behind the door.
The shadows of mulberry and locust trees stretch at dusk as the Spring Festival disperses,

Being alone as a stranger in a foreign place,
I feel a deeper longing for kin on every festive day.

小寒食舟中作

唐·杜甫

佳辰强饮食犹寒，隐几萧条戴鹖冠。
春水船如天上坐，老年花似雾中看。
娟娟戏蝶过闲幔，片片轻鸥下急湍。
云白山青万余里，愁看直北是长安。

明月几时有？把酒问青天。

起舞弄清影，何时在人间。

转朱阁，低绮户，照无眠。
不应有恨，何事长向别时圆？
人有悲欢离合，月有阴晴圆缺，此事古难全。
