About Omeka

Omeka is a free, flexible, and open source web-publishing platform for the display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions.

Omeka is a web publishing platform developed at the Center for HIstory and New Media at George Mason University focusing on the creation, curation, and exhibit of digital assets. The platform encourages the development of virtual exhibits, containing an extensive list of descriptive metadata fields for describing digital assets. The metadata fields offered by Omeka adhere to Dublin Core, a standard commonly used by libraries, museums and archives. The availability of rich metadata functionality set Omeka apart from other content management systems and makes Omeka particularly suitable for proper citation and scholarly work.

In addition to the cataloging and curation features of the system, Omeka on McGraw Commons is extended with plugins for geo-locating items in the collections and adding timelines to online exhibits.

Curious about the name? “Omeka” means “to display or lay out wares” in Swahili.
