{"id":72,"date":"2018-08-09T12:56:35","date_gmt":"2018-08-09T12:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/56-terrier\/?p=72"},"modified":"2018-08-15T13:39:26","modified_gmt":"2018-08-15T13:39:26","slug":"class-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/commons.princeton.edu\/56-terrier\/2018\/08\/09\/class-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Class 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Reading Assignment:\u00a0<\/strong>Shop Class as Soulcraft\u00a0&#8211; p115-125<\/p>\n<p><strong>In-Class Discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shop Class as Soulcraft\u00a0&#8211; Chapter 5: p103-109<\/p>\n<p>Storyline:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Narrator begins with the story of his life, and how he realized he did not want to be a professor and instead wanted to be an electrician<\/li>\n<li>Discussed tearing down a Honda CB360 and rebuilding it as a cafe racer (modifying a bike so that it can run very fast and would race these bikes from bar to bar)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tools and Parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Compressor: takes atmospheric pressure and raises it about 100 lbs\/in^2<\/li>\n<li>Pneumatic Tools: hand tools that run on air motors\/turbines<\/li>\n<li>Die Grinder: high speed air motors with a shaped stone to grind<\/li>\n<li>Impact wrench: high speed air motor that allows user not to over-torque device<\/li>\n<li>Cutoff wheel: air motor &#8211; high speed spinning discs that can grind away a thin slow without damage<\/li>\n<li>Cleaners: different solvents used for different purposes&#8211;electrical cleaner, carburetor cleaner, engine degreaser<\/li>\n<li>Cutting oil: dry lubrication<\/li>\n<li>Moly (molybdenum) grease: can work well under high temperatures<\/li>\n<li>Lithium grease: cannot handle high temperatures<\/li>\n<li>Antiseize compound: lubrication in aluminum<\/li>\n<li>Use oxygen and acetylene tank together to act as a torch<\/li>\n<li>Impedance: relates to electrical parts &#8211; represents effects of inductive and resistant loads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More Storyline:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Narrator&#8217;s starter motor would not start so he took it to Fred who is an accomplished mechanic<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Liberal&#8221; Arts vs. &#8220;Servile&#8221; Arts goes hand in hand with the Classical vs. Romantic theme<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shop Class as Soulcraft\u00a0&#8211; Chapter 5: p109-115<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Narrator has his own business fixing motorcycles, and has other people working in the vicinity<\/li>\n<li>Some mechanics won&#8217;t take on certain projects because of potential complications that are not worth the time and effort.<\/li>\n<li>Narrator has a log book that records the time charged for customers and the actual time spent working.
